Let’s begin with a definition. A domain name identifies an individual website on the Internet and can be any length up to 67 characters, including the 26 letters of the English alphabet, numbers 0 through 9 and hyphens (-). In addition, every domain name ends with a suffix or extension that’s based on the type of organization with which your site is associated. Common extensions include .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .us and .edu. Here are some tips on how to choose a successful domain name for your website.
- Start by listing words that are relevant to your business and to the content of your website.
- Make different word combinations from your list that are short, memorable, not easily confused, hard to misspell and related to the core of your business. Keep in mind that shorter domain names are easier to type and remember.
- Choose the word combinations that you like best and begin searching for domain availability. If you don’t know how to do this, get in touch with me. I’ll be glad to help!
- Register your new domain name. If possible, register your domain with every available extension and point them all to your website.
- Don’t use numerical characters, text message abbreviations or deliberate “cute” misspellings.
- Avoid padding your domain name with legal designations like “llc,” “inc” or “company.”
- Steer clear of brand names or trademarks that you don’t own. You can be sued!
More than 130 million domain names have been registered worldwide and thousands are added every day. Don’t get discouraged if the name you want is already owned by another company. Creativity and flexibility are key. And keep in mind, Ovation Creative will register your domain name free for the first year if we design your website.
